Lawyer: Cops agreed on Story

AN ATTORNEY has suggested that police officers who were dispatched to Land Lock, St Lucy on the day I’Akobi Maloney died conspired to say they did not see how he died.

Andrew Pilgrim, who is representing the Maloney family, made this comment after Constables Anderson Ellis and Kevin Boyce said they did not focus on Land Lock on June 17, even though they were each in close proximity to the area.

Ellis said he was dispatched to Cove Bay and that he was focussing on a white boat which was out at sea.

He stated that he heard Sergeant Wingrove Headley transmitting on the VHF radio that he had Maloney in custody but he never looked over to Land Lock which was next to Cove Bay because he was busy looking at the boat.

Asked by Pilgrim if he spent the entire time looking at the boat, Ellis said he also searched the area but never looked over at the area.

Constable Kevin Boyce said he was dispatched along with other police officers to the Wakes, St Peter where he had an panoramic view of Little Bay, Land Lock and Coves Bay. However, he stated that he kept his eyes solely on Coves Bay even though he too heard Headley’s transmission that he was at Land Lock with Maloney.

He agreed with Coroner Faith Marshall-Harris that he was sent to Wakes because he would have an overall view of the area but maintained that he did not look in the direction of Land Lock.

“I had to look at Cove Bay to see if there were any other persons,” Boyce insisted.

Pilgrim responded: “It seems as if you and the other police officers who went conspired to say you all did not see anything. None of the other police officers detailed to the area are prepared to say that they saw Headley, Walkes and Maloney”.

Constable Boyce then agreed with Pilgrim that only Constable Walkes and Sergeant Headley saw when Maloney jumped off the cliff.

“As far as the police officers giving evidence are concerned Headley and Walkes are on their own”, Pilgrim told coroner Faith Marshall-Harris.
