Friends never saw a depressed Maloney

I’AKOBI MALONEY was yesterday described as very creative, intelligent and someone who was not impulsive.

Best friends Ayesha Delpeche and Renaldo Depeiza both gave evidence at the Coroner’s inquest into the tragic death of the young man.

Delpeche said she had known Maloney for about six years. She said that while he never expressed any concerns about his work to her she was not surprised to learn that he had resigned from his job.

“He was a very creative individual. I know he was interested in exploring creative things and he use to go around people who were poets and musicians”, she stated.

She however stated that it would surprise her to learn that he was disturbed enough to commit suicide.

“He was never impulsive”, Delpeche stated adding, “he was very humble, very calm, very intelligent and always in control of himself. He never allowed his emotions or anybody else’s to sway him. He was a very strong individual”.

Questioned by the coroner, she explained that if confronted with a situation Maloney “would choose not to react. He would choose to be proactive”, she stated.

She also told the court that Maloney loved nature and being near to the sea but that she had never heard him mention that he was going to St Lucy.

Depeiza told the court that he had known Maloney all of his life and that they were distant cousins.

He said that he had spoken to him two days before he returned to work but that Maloney never expressed any reservations about going back to work.

He said Maloney appeared happy and that he was looking forward to going back to work.

“I have never seen him sad. I have never known him to be depressed. He has never spoken to me about suicide”, Depeiza stated, adding that Maloney lived by the principles in The Bible.

“I was astounded to hear such allegations made that he would kill himself”, the young man added.

Questioned by police Inspector Martin Jones, the witness stated that he was not surprised that Maloney had resigned from his job the same day that he returned to work.

He explained that Maloney was sick prior to returning to work . . . because the cement had made him ill.
