Father tells court: I received psychiatric help

I’AKOBI MALONEY’S FATHER admitted to the coroner’s inquest investigating his son’s death, that he once received psychiatric treatment but said he had never attempted suicide.

David Maloney, of 6th Avenue, New Orleans, St Michael, said he received this treatment back in the 1980s.

“There was a time in the 1980s when I wasn’t feeling very well and I was sent there (Psychiatric Hospital) for observation and a chemical imbalance was the reason they gave,” he said.

He explained to the court he was not eating well and he used to frequent Temple Yard to do odd jobs at the cook shops there.

He said he often frequented the beach and on a particular day, he was at a beach in Christ Church where he was robbed of all his belongings and his clothes.

“I was left stranded - naked - and the police were called in for a man in the area who was naked. I was sent to the hospital by the magistrate for observation. That was the only time.”

He said he also had a relative, Margretha Maloney, who was an outpatient of the Psychiatric Hospital but he did not know why she was receiving treatment.

The man further told the court his son did not live with him but he would see him about once a week.

He said I’Akobi never indicated to him that he was under any pressure.
