Mum: More in the bag than meets the eye

by PCA (www.nationnews.com)

THE MYSTERY surrounding the death of I’Akobi Maloney at Cove Bay, St Lucy, on June 17, has deepened with the return of his haversack to his mother.

Police returned Maloney’s bag to his mother Maggie Maloney last week, and she had serious issues with its condition and its contents.

“The police statement that they released clearly states that he jumped with clothes on and his haversack on his back.

“If that is the case, and the cause of death they gave was drowning, then everything in the bag should be water damaged. The bag and its contents are dry – no sea-salt, the papers in it are not mildewed, not sticking together, just dry,” said Maloney.

The statement given by Assistant Commissioner of Police Seymour Cumberbatch in the July 5 edition of the SATURDAY SUN said: “Maloney, on request of the police, put back on his clothing and placed his haversack on his back and started to accompany officers away from the cliff. It was during this period the young man darted away and jumped over the cliff.”

Speaking to the SATURDAY SUN from her home on Thursday, the grieving mother pulled items from the bag – one heavy-duty measuring tape, soiled disposable gloves, pens, wallet containing bank, identification and business cards, capoeira guide, payslips, June 9 edition of Barbados Advocate and the June 17 edition of the DAILY NATION.

Efforts to reach Assistant Superintendent Curvan Harvey, the senior officer conducting the investigation, were unsuccessful.

However, on Wednesday, when asked about the Justice Committee’s request to have the officers that were on the scene suspended, Harvey said: “People can have their own opinion and say what they want. I will be concluding this investigation very soon.”

TO THE ADMINISTRATORS OF RASTASPEAKS.COM AND OTHER FORUM : WE LIVE IN THE USA WHERE THE FIRST AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA GIVES US FREEDOM OF SPEECH. TO DENY SUCH FREEDOM IS ILLEGAL. I HAVE READ RAS SHAWN NAPHTALI’S POSITION ON THE TOPIC OF RACE IE. “ARE WHITE PEOPLE DEVILS?”

IF YOU ALLOW THE LAW TO HAVE ITS COURSE AND IF YOU READ THE THREAD YOU WILL SEE HOW IT WAS SHAPING-UP. I READ IT. RAS SHAWN MADE VALID AND SOUND REASONING REGARDING THE ISSUE, I MYSELF WAS IN THE PROCESS OF POSTING A RESPONSE TO THE THREAD ON 7/26/08 @ APROX. 6:30PM I WAS PREVENTED FROM POSTING MY “IDEAS” AND RESPONSE EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A COLLEGE AND THERE IS THE PREMISE OF ‘A FREE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS:” IS THIS A FARSE ?

WE WANT TO KNOW YOUR POSITION; YOU SAY YOU ARE BEING MONITORED: BY WHOM? FOR WHAT REASONS? IT REEKS OF SUPPRESSION. SO WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ONE LAW BREAKER AND THE OTHER? PLEASE RESPOND.
