RED, MAROON and other brightly-coloured clothing, brilliant sunshine, rhythmic drumming and loud chants were the hallmarks of a thanksgiving service for I’Akobi Tacuma Maloney yesterday.

It was standing room only in the chapel of the Westbury Cemetery where family, friends, classmates and teachers of Christ Church Foundation School, some of the Barbadian students Tacuma represented at the St Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies, and supporters gathered to say goodbye.

Eulogist Hamilton Lashley said the “untimely” passing of the 23-year-old Barbados Exhibitioner would create a “serious vaccum in relation to the development of our young people”.

Tacuma died on June 17 at Land Locks, near Cove Bay, St Lucy.

The police report said they responded to a call of a drug landing in the area around 5:30 p.m. that day, where they observed and interviewed the part-time chemical engineer at the Arawak Cement Plant.

“Initial investigations reveal that Maloney suddenly ran and jumped off a cliff, landing on a ledge below. Shortly after this he was washed off this ledge by the pounding waves, which took him out into the sea,” police said in a release.
